SAFETY
The Training Rules and Safety
Department is responsible for maintaining all records on any
injury, accident/incident, or grade-crossing accident. Reports
are compiled each month and forwarded to the
Federal Railroad Administration.
Montana Rail Link was named the Gold winner of the Harriman
Award, designating its performance in 1998 as the safest shortline
railroad in the country.
Goals
It is our goal to
be the safest railroad in the industry. The first step comes
from within our organization. Pride and accountability exhibited
by our employees will carry the message to our customers and
the communities we live in -- We are unconditionally committed
to be a leader in the industry and public safety.
Team Players
The Montana Rail
Link safety plan is based on employee involvement and accountability.
Our "one-on-one" Peer Intervention Program encourages
each employee to openly approach others who may be observed
performing an unsafe act.
The Safety Committees at four major terminals meet monthly
as a forum for discussing changes in rules and regulations,
standards, programs, and processes; and identifying and eliminating
potential hazards. The committees also meet to facilitate
communication and cooperation between employees and management
to produce effective solutions to potential safety problems.
The management support for the safety committees is provided
by our "Senior Safety Council" which meets quarterly
to evaluate our safety plan progress, potential safety education
programs, and the company's financial commitment to safety.
Operation
Lifesaver is a
nationwide, non-profit, public information program dedicated
to reducing collisions, injuries and fatalities at highway-rail
grade crossings. Operation Lifesaver maintains a 3-E philosophy:
Education, Engineering and Enforcement.
Montana Rail Link Operation Lifesaver
presenters are well trained and use the latest materials and
videos for their presentations. The basic program is about 30-minutes
long, which includes a short video presentation. The materials,
handouts and presentations are free of charge and applicable
to all age groups.

Keeping Tabs
Safety is the responsibility
of every employee. Safety report forms request information
from employees in the field and are available at all work
locations. Employee recommendations are evaluated to determine
if changes in work practice, environmental corrections, or
equipment modifications are required.
Our safety committees spearhead an annual system-wide safety
audit. Teams evaluate all office and shop facilities, right
of way conditions, employee work activities, and rules compliance.
Results are tabulated and submitted to the appropriate department
for remedial action.
